Understand How Resale Restrictions Affect Your DVC Membership
When considering a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) resale contract, it’s crucial to understand how resale restrictions can affect your vacation options and overall membership benefits. Whether you're a first-time buyer or looking to add points, knowing what you gain or miss through resale can help you make an informed decision.
What Are DVC Resale Restrictions?
DVC resale restrictions refer to the limitations Disney has placed on contracts purchased through the resale market rather than directly from Disney. These restrictions determine how and where you can use your points and which membership perks are included.
Key Limitations for Resale Buyers
For contracts purchased after March 21, 2011:
-
Resale buyers are not eligible for Membership Extras, including discounts on dining, merchandise, and special member events.
For contracts purchased after January 19, 2019:
-
Resale points can only be used at the original 14 DVC resorts (e.g., Saratoga Springs, Old Key West, Animal Kingdom Lodge, etc.). You will not be able to use points at newer resorts like Disney Riviera Resort, Polynesian Tower, or Villas at Disneyland Hotel.
For Riviera Resort contracts sold via resale:
-
Points may only be used at Riviera Resort and not at any other DVC property.
What You Still Get With Resale
Despite these limitations, resale buyers still enjoy many core benefits:
-
Access to popular DVC resorts like Beach Club Villas, BoardWalk Villas, and Bay Lake Tower.
-
The ability to book vacations at significant savings.
-
Use of the 11-month home resort booking window and the 7-month booking window at other eligible resorts.
-
Banking, borrowing, and transferring points functions remain intact.
Who Should Consider a Resale Contract?
Resale may be ideal for those who:
-
Want to save significantly compared to Disney’s direct pricing.
-
Primarily plan to stay at one of the 14 original DVC resorts.
-
Do not prioritize Membership Extras like tours and discounts.
Evaluate Your Priorities
Choosing between resale and direct purchase comes down to your goals. If maximizing savings is your top priority, and you don't mind fewer perks, resale might be the perfect option. If you want access to all DVC resorts and exclusive member benefits, buying direct could be the way to go.
