How to Purchase Walt Disney World and Disney Theme Park Tickets

DVC resale – Explore magical Disney resorts and adventures.

Buying Disney theme park tickets has gotten more complicated than it used to be. Gone are the days when you simply showed up, paid at the gate, and walked in. Today's Disney ticketing system involves date-specific tickets, park reservations, optional add-ons, and pricing that varies significantly based on how and when you purchase. For DVC members and first-time visitors alike, understanding the system before you buy saves real money and frustration.

This guide walks through the full process clearly, without the sales pressure of Disney's own ticketing pages.

The Basics: How Disney Park Tickets Work Today

Disney theme park tickets are date-specific. When you purchase a ticket, you select the date you plan to visit each park. Prices vary by date based on demand, so a Saturday in July costs more than a Tuesday in January. Disney calls these tiers different names, but the practical meaning is that popular dates are more expensive.

In addition to the date-specific ticket, most visitors also need a Park Pass reservation. This is a separate reservation that confirms your intent to visit a specific park on a specific date. The Park Pass system was introduced during the pandemic as a capacity management tool and has remained in place. You need both a valid ticket for the date and a confirmed Park Pass reservation to enter a park.

Park Hopper is an optional add-on that allows you to visit multiple parks on the same day. Without Park Hopper, your ticket is valid for one specific park on that date. With Park Hopper, you can enter a second park after 2 PM. The Park Hopper fee adds a flat amount per day to the base ticket price.

Where to Buy Disney Tickets

The safest place to buy Disney tickets is directly from Disney. The official Walt Disney World website and the Disneyland website both sell tickets, and the confirmation you receive is guaranteed valid. Third-party ticket sellers exist, and some are legitimate authorized resellers, but counterfeit and fraudulent Disney tickets are a real problem. If you buy from a third party and the ticket does not scan at the gate, Disney cannot help you. That is a miserable way to start a vacation.

Authorized third-party sellers include travel agencies and discount ticket specialists. Companies like Undercover Tourist are widely considered reputable authorized resellers and often offer small discounts below Disney's direct pricing. Discounts in the range of 3 to 7 percent are typical from authorized resellers. Larger discounts should be treated as a warning sign.

What to avoid: tickets sold on auction sites, tickets sold by individuals on social media or craigslist, tickets sold by companies with no clear authorization from Disney. Biometric data is now collected at Disney park entrances, which theoretically prevents ticket resale, but fraudulent ticket operations still exist and still victimize buyers.

Types of Tickets

Single Day Tickets

Single day tickets are valid for one park on one date. They are the most expensive per-day option and make sense primarily for day trips or visits where you are certain you only want one day at the parks. Prices fluctuate significantly based on the date selected, with weekend summer days and holiday periods commanding the highest prices.

Multi-Day Tickets

Multi-day tickets cover a specified number of park days and are significantly more cost-effective per day than single-day tickets. A 4-day ticket costs considerably less per day than four separate single-day tickets. Multi-day tickets at Walt Disney World are valid across a window of days longer than the number of park days purchased, giving flexibility to use them across a vacation that includes non-park days.

For most vacations of three days or more, multi-day tickets represent better value than single-day purchases. The per-day cost continues to drop as the number of days increases, up to a point.

Annual Passes

Disney offers annual pass programs at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland under different names and with different tier structures. Annual passes make financial sense for families who visit Disney more than a few times per year or who live within driving distance of a Disney destination.

DVC members have access to specific annual pass options that are not available to the general public. The DVC member annual pass tiers have historically offered discounts and in some cases fewer blockout dates compared to equivalent non-member pass tiers. Disney updates pass structures periodically, so checking the current DVC member ticketing page for the most accurate information is essential before purchasing.

Park Hopper: Is It Worth It?

Park Hopper makes financial sense in specific situations and is not worth the cost in others. If you are visiting for multiple days and want to experience attractions or dining in more than one park each day, Park Hopper creates that flexibility. If you are doing one park per day and your schedule is structured around staying in a single park start to finish, you are paying for an option you will not use.

The 2 PM restriction on park hopping is worth understanding before you purchase. You cannot switch parks freely before 2 PM. If your plan involves spending the morning at Epcot and the afternoon at Hollywood Studios, Park Hopper supports that. If you want to hop at noon, it does not.

For DVC members who visit frequently, Park Hopper becomes more valuable as a standard practice because it creates more variety across a multi-day stay. A member who visits several times per year may find the flexibility worth having as a default.

The Lightning Lane System

Disney's Lightning Lane replaces the old FastPass system and operates differently. Lightning Lane Individual Selections are available for the highest-demand attractions at an additional per-person charge per ride. Lightning Lane Multi Pass is an add-on that functions more like the old MaxPass system, allowing one Lightning Lane reservation at a time across most attractions except those reserved for Individual Selection.

These systems are in addition to park ticket costs. Factor them into your total budget if you are planning to use them. Families visiting during busy periods often find Lightning Lane reduces wait times significantly for the attractions they most want to experience. Families visiting during slower periods may find standby queues are short enough that the additional cost is not justified.

Timing Your Purchase

Buying tickets early is consistently the right approach for busy periods. Disney's date-specific pricing tends to increase as dates fill up. Purchasing 60 to 90 days in advance for summer and holiday trips typically gets you better pricing than buying close to your visit date. Park Pass reservations for popular dates also fill up, and a confirmed reservation requires holding a purchased ticket.

Shoulder season visitors, specifically those traveling in January through March or in September and October, have more flexibility. Prices are lower, Park Pass reservations are generally available closer to the date, and the parks are less crowded. For families who can travel outside peak periods, these windows represent meaningfully better value.

DVC Member Ticket Discounts

DVC members have access to discounted tickets beyond what is available to the general public. These discounts are not enormous, typically in the range of 5 to 10 percent, but they add up over a family's annual Disney spending. The DVC member website lists current ticket discounts, and these offers change periodically.

For DVC members who are also purchasing annual passes, the DVC-specific pass tiers can represent more significant savings depending on how frequently you visit. Running the math between the DVC annual pass cost and the cost of multi-day tickets for your anticipated visit frequency usually shows which option costs less. For two or more visits per year, the annual pass often wins.

One important note: DVC membership does not include free park admission. DVC points cover resort accommodations. Park tickets are a separate expense regardless of whether you are a DVC member. This is a common misunderstanding among people new to DVC. The value proposition of DVC is in the accommodation cost relative to paying cash hotel rates at Disney resorts, not in free park access.

Understanding the full cost structure of Disney vacations, including both accommodation and park tickets, is part of evaluating whether DVC makes financial sense. The how DVC works page covers the cost comparison in detail. And if you have specific questions about how DVC membership fits into your overall Disney vacation budget, our team is available to help you run those numbers with real data rather than estimates.

Tickets for Disneyland Versus Walt Disney World

The ticketing systems at Disneyland and Walt Disney World share the same basic structure but have some differences. Disneyland's Park Hopper allows movement between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure. Walt Disney World's Park Hopper covers all four parks.

Disneyland ticket prices tend to be slightly lower than equivalent Walt Disney World tickets because the resort covers fewer days for most visitors. A two-day Disneyland visit covers both parks adequately. A two-day Walt Disney World visit barely covers one or two parks out of four.

Annual passes at Disneyland and Walt Disney World are separate programs. You cannot use a Disneyland annual pass at Walt Disney World or vice versa, even if you are a DVC member. If you visit both destinations regularly, you would need to evaluate each pass program separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Park Pass reservation in addition to a ticket?

Yes, at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, most visits currently require a Park Pass reservation in addition to a valid park ticket. Reservations are tied to specific parks on specific dates. Annual passholders also typically need reservations during busy periods. Disney's policies on when reservations are required have shifted over time, so checking the current requirement before your visit is the right approach.

Can DVC members get discounts on Disney park tickets?

Yes. DVC membership includes access to discounted ticket pricing not available to the general public. The discount amounts and available ticket types vary and are updated periodically. The DVC member website is the authoritative source for current member ticket pricing. Disney sales associates and the DVC member services phone line can also provide current pricing information.

What is the cheapest way to buy Disney tickets?

For most visitors, buying through Disney directly or through an authorized reseller like Undercover Tourist offers the best combination of price and security. Buying multi-day tickets well in advance of your trip for non-peak dates tends to offer the lowest per-day cost. DVC member discounts apply on top of base ticket pricing for members. Extremely low prices from non-authorized sellers should be treated with significant skepticism.

I’ve dealt with Mark for over 20 years, he’s always available to answer my silly questions, and give honest advice, even if it’s to his detriment. When the time comes to sell, Mark will be my first call.

Mitzi and I couldn't have had a more positive experience as the one which we had, in selling some of our DVC points through DVC Sales with Mark and Lori Webb. and their staff. The whole process was transparent, seamless and we were being fully briefed as to the. progress. Thanks to Mark we were kept aware as to what was happening with the listing, with the ROFR bu Disney, and with the closing process completed, all in a short months' time. We couldn't have asked for a better group than DVC Sales for the sale. they were honest . amd truly caring on our behalf. Mitzi and Lee Tucholski

Foreign sellers, beware; they will not provide correct information to you about what you can expect when selling. They also, at the end of the process, hit you with fees you did not expect, and you are too late to do anything about it.

I could not imagine being happier with my experience using DVC Sales to sell our Old Key West membership. We enjoyed so many years of Disney vacations. While on your website I started a chat that turned into a call with Lori. She took the time to explain how the website works. Within a few minutes I had created my account and listed my membership for sale. Within 3-4 weeks we received an offer and sold our membership. Thankyou Lori and DVC Sales!

Mark, today we have just received the last check for our 4th contract you sold for us. Our experience was outstanding you deserve the acknowledgement for your service. You remind me of the way customers were treated years ago. Everybody we spoke with or chatted online was friendly and helpful. Although the process took a few months, it was worth the wait. We hope the families who purchased on contracts have as much enjoyment as we have had. If anyone is looking to buy or sell a DVC membership you can use our name. Thank you again!
