Here’s What Disney’s Aulani Can offer You

DVC resale – Explore magical Disney resorts and adventures.
Luxurious pool area at Disney's Aulani Resort

Disney's Aulani Resort sits on the west shore of Oahu, and it feels different from every other DVC property the moment you step off the shuttle. There are no theme parks nearby, no castle in the skyline, and no fireworks at 9 PM. What you get instead is a genuine Hawaiian vacation with Disney's trademark attention to detail woven through every part of the experience. We've helped quite a few families purchase Aulani points over the years, and the ones who love it most are the ones who understood going in that this resort is its own thing entirely.

The resort is located in Ko Olina, a planned resort community about 17 miles west of Honolulu's airport. That drive gives you a good sense of what Ko Olina is about. You leave the city behind, pass through low hills and coastline, and arrive at a stretch of calm, protected lagoons that are genuinely some of the best family swimming spots in Hawaii. Aulani sits directly on Lagunoon One, and the difference between swimming in a calm Ko Olina lagoon versus a typical open beach is real, especially if you are traveling with young kids.

Getting There and Getting Around

You fly into Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. From there, a rental car or rideshare puts you at Aulani in about 25 minutes under normal traffic conditions, though rush hour can stretch that considerably. Most families who plan to explore Oahu rent a car for at least part of their stay, since the island has a lot to offer and public transit does not reach every destination you might want.

If you plan to stay mostly on resort property, a car is not strictly necessary. But Pearl Harbor, Honolulu's cultural districts, and the North Shore's famous beaches are all worth a day trip, and having your own vehicle makes those much easier. In our experience, families who rent a car for even two or three days of a week-long stay feel like they got considerably more out of Hawaii than those who stayed resort-bound the whole time.

For DVC members thinking about point requirements, Aulani uses separate point charts from the Walt Disney World resorts. The points required can run higher than comparable stays in Florida, particularly during peak seasons like summer, Christmas week, and spring break. That is partly a reflection of the resort's uniqueness and partly the reality that a Hawaiian resort with limited inventory commands a premium.

What the Resort Actually Offers

The pool complex at Aulani is called Waikolohe Valley, and it is genuinely impressive. There's a lazy river that winds through caves and under waterfalls, a children's area called Keiki Cove with shallower water and smaller slides, adult-only pools for when you need a break from the family activity, and a main pool area that handles the bulk of daily use. The lazy river alone can occupy young children for hours. We've heard from families that their kids asked to skip a planned beach day because they didn't want to leave the pool, which says something.

The lagoon access is what sets Aulani apart from most resort pools. The protected water right in front of the resort is clean, calm, and full of tropical fish. You can snorkel directly off the beach with gear rented from the resort, and on a typical clear morning, you'll see fish without having to go more than waist-deep. For families with children who have never snorkeled before, this is an ideal introduction. The conditions are forgiving and the payoff is immediate.

Character Experiences With a Hawaiian Twist

Disney characters at Aulani appear in Hawaiian attire rather than their standard park costumes, which is a small touch that works surprisingly well. Mickey and Minnie in aloha shirts and leis fit the environment in a way that their traditional outfits would not. Meet-and-greet opportunities are available throughout the resort, and because Aulani does not have the crowds that Walt Disney World sees, character interactions tend to feel more personal and less rushed.

The resort also hosts the KA WA'A luau on select evenings, a signature dining and cultural performance experience. It requires a separate reservation and is not included in your stay, but the combination of food, storytelling, and traditional Hawaiian performance makes it worth booking for families who want a structured evening activity. Disney's version maintains the production quality you would expect, and it holds up well compared to other luau experiences on the island.

Dining at Aulani

'AMA'AMA is the resort's primary table-service restaurant, serving contemporary Hawaiian cuisine with ocean views and a menu that features locally sourced ingredients. It's worth making a reservation for a proper sit-down dinner. The food leans into Hawaiian flavors without being so regional that picky eaters will struggle. For daily meals, Makahiki offers breakfast character dining and dinner buffet service. Lava Java handles coffee and quick breakfast items in the mornings, and the Lava Shack provides poolside food so you do not have to leave the water activity area to eat.

One thing worth noting is that Hawaii in general has higher grocery prices than the mainland. If you are staying in a villa with a full kitchen and plan to do some cooking, budget accordingly. The Kapolei area near Ko Olina has grocery options a short drive away, which many families use for breakfast supplies and snacks throughout the week.

Accommodations and Villa Types

Aulani offers both hotel rooms and DVC villas. The DVC villas range from studio units up to three-bedroom Grand Villas. The island-inspired decor uses rich woods, tropical colors, and Hawaiian artwork, and the whole place feels more cohesive and place-specific than resorts that feel like they could be transplanted elsewhere without much change.

Studio villas sleep up to four guests and include a kitchenette with microwave, mini-refrigerator, and coffee maker. That covers the basics, but if you are feeding a family for a week in Hawaii, you will probably want more cooking capacity. One-bedroom villas add a full kitchen, separate living area, and a king bed in the bedroom with a sleeper sofa in the living room. They sleep up to five guests and make a substantial difference in comfort and flexibility for families trying to manage meal costs in an expensive destination.

Two-bedroom villas accommodate up to nine guests and include the full kitchen setup, a master bedroom, a second bedroom with bunk beds, and the living area. That configuration works well for two families traveling together or for extended family trips. Three-bedroom Grand Villas sleep up to twelve and include everything a large group would need for an extended stay.

One feature that matters a lot specifically at a Hawaii resort: every DVC villa at Aulani includes an in-unit washer and dryer. When you are constantly rotating through wet swimsuits, sandy beach clothes, and snorkeling gear, that appliance earns its keep every single day of your trip.

Room Categories and Views

Aulani offers standard view, poolside garden view, partial ocean view, and ocean view room categories. The ocean view rooms face directly toward the Pacific and genuinely deliver on the promise. Waking up to that view on a clear Hawaiian morning is one of those experiences that justifies the extra points. Partial ocean view rooms offer glimpses of water alongside pool or garden scenery, which is a reasonable middle ground. Standard view rooms face the resort's interior.

If you are trying to decide whether the ocean view is worth the additional points, our honest take is that it depends on how much time you plan to spend in your room. Families who are up at dawn and out until dark might not feel the difference much. Families who like to start mornings slowly on the balcony or wind down evenings with a view tend to find the upgrade worthwhile.

Cultural Programming

Aulani takes its cultural mission seriously in a way that genuinely shows. The resort employs cultural advisors from across Hawaii, and the activities available go well beyond what you would find at a typical Disney property. You can take hula lessons, make leis, hear stories about Hawaiian history and traditions from people who know them firsthand, and participate in activities that teach about the islands in a hands-on way. This is not filler programming designed to keep guests busy. It is substantive, and kids tend to engage with it far more than parents expect.

Aunty's Beach House is the resort's supervised children's activity program, and it is well-designed. Kids participate in traditional Hawaiian games, crafts, and stories alongside Disney entertainment, and the blend works better than you might expect. It gives parents genuine downtime while kids come away with something more substantive than another hour of character meet-and-greets.

The Painted Sky: Starlit Huaka'i is an evening projection show unique to Aulani, displayed on the resort's buildings and drawing from Hawaiian mythology as its source material. It is the kind of cultural storytelling Disney does well when it applies real care, and it is one of those experiences you genuinely will not find at any other Disney property in the world.

Booking Strategy for Aulani

If Aulani is your home resort, your 11-month booking window gives you the best access to desirable dates. The resort's limited inventory compared to Walt Disney World means that peak dates fill faster than many members expect. Christmas week, spring break, and summer months are the hardest to secure, and members who wait until seven months out often find those dates are gone.

If Aulani is not your home resort, you are booking at the seven-month mark alongside every other DVC member looking at Hawaii. Popular seasons require booking right at that seven-month window to have a realistic shot at your preferred dates. Value season dates are more forgiving, and shoulder periods like late January through early March or September through October tend to have better availability.

The travel distance from the mainland also shapes how most families approach an Aulani trip. The flight from the East Coast runs around ten hours, and from the West Coast closer to five or six. That investment of time means most guests stay at least a week, which aligns well with how DVC points work for longer stays. A three-night trip to Aulani rarely feels worth the journey. A full week gives you time to actually settle in and take advantage of what the resort and island offer.

Is Aulani the Right DVC Purchase?

Aulani ownership makes the most sense for families who genuinely love Hawaii and plan to return regularly. The point requirements are higher than most Walt Disney World resorts, so if Hawaii is a once-in-a-decade destination for your family, it is probably more efficient to book Aulani using Walt Disney World home resort points during the seven-month window rather than purchasing Aulani points specifically.

But for families who prioritize beach vacations, prefer the natural beauty of Hawaii over theme park intensity, or have multi-generational groups that appreciate having a world-class resort with culturally rich programming, Aulani ownership makes a compelling case. The resort is genuinely unlike any other DVC property, and that uniqueness has real value if it matches how your family likes to vacation.

I’ve dealt with Mark for over 20 years, he’s always available to answer my silly questions, and give honest advice, even if it’s to his detriment. When the time comes to sell, Mark will be my first call.

Mitzi and I couldn't have had a more positive experience as the one which we had, in selling some of our DVC points through DVC Sales with Mark and Lori Webb. and their staff. The whole process was transparent, seamless and we were being fully briefed as to the. progress. Thanks to Mark we were kept aware as to what was happening with the listing, with the ROFR bu Disney, and with the closing process completed, all in a short months' time. We couldn't have asked for a better group than DVC Sales for the sale. they were honest . amd truly caring on our behalf. Mitzi and Lee Tucholski

Foreign sellers, beware; they will not provide correct information to you about what you can expect when selling. They also, at the end of the process, hit you with fees you did not expect, and you are too late to do anything about it.

I could not imagine being happier with my experience using DVC Sales to sell our Old Key West membership. We enjoyed so many years of Disney vacations. While on your website I started a chat that turned into a call with Lori. She took the time to explain how the website works. Within a few minutes I had created my account and listed my membership for sale. Within 3-4 weeks we received an offer and sold our membership. Thankyou Lori and DVC Sales!

Mark, today we have just received the last check for our 4th contract you sold for us. Our experience was outstanding you deserve the acknowledgement for your service. You remind me of the way customers were treated years ago. Everybody we spoke with or chatted online was friendly and helpful. Although the process took a few months, it was worth the wait. We hope the families who purchased on contracts have as much enjoyment as we have had. If anyone is looking to buy or sell a DVC membership you can use our name. Thank you again!
