DVC Resorts' Activities Are Not To Be Missed

DVC Resort Activities Worth Planning Around

DVC resort activities and experiences

There is a tendency to think of DVC resort activities as the stuff you do when you are too tired for the parks. That framing undersells them completely. Some of the best programming at DVC resorts is worth planning a whole day around, not just filling dead time. The better question is not whether resort activities are worth your time, but which ones are worth prioritizing and at which resorts.

We see this shift in thinking happen with families who own DVC and have stayed at multiple resorts over several years. The first few trips are all parks, all the time. By the third or fourth year, people are deliberately building resort days into the trip. They have figured out that a morning on the water at Old Key West or an afternoon at Stormalong Bay is not a second-rate Disney day, it is a different kind of Disney day that they now look forward to specifically.

This guide covers the resort activities at DVC properties that are genuinely worth planning around, not just falling back on.

Stormalong Bay at Beach Club Villas

Stormalong Bay is the crown jewel of DVC resort amenities and it is not close. It covers three acres, has a sandy bottom lagoon, a shipwreck water slide, multiple hot tubs, a lazy river section, a kids' play area, and zero-entry access. It does not look like a hotel pool. It looks like a small water park with theming and attention to detail that most water parks cannot match.

The key detail about Stormalong Bay is that it is exclusive to guests staying at Beach Club or the adjacent Yacht Club. You cannot access it as a guest at another nearby resort. That exclusivity is part of what makes it special. On a busy Disney day, the park pools are comfortable and uncrowded relative to the parks, but Stormalong Bay stays genuinely manageable because the capacity is limited to two hotel's worth of guests.

Families with children in the water-obsessed age range, roughly 4 through 12, often build their entire trip structure around Stormalong Bay. Park mornings, pool afternoons, park evenings. The combination gives kids variety and gives adults recovery time. If this is appealing to your family, buying at Beach Club Villas and securing the 11-month home resort booking advantage is worth thinking about. See current Beach Club resale listings to understand pricing.

Fireworks Cruises at Magic Kingdom Area Resorts

The specialty fireworks cruises that depart from resort marinas at Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Wilderness Lodge are worth going out of your way for. You board a small boat, head out onto Seven Seas Lagoon, and watch Happily Ever After from the water. The Magic Kingdom sits in front of you across the lagoon. Cinderella Castle is visible and the fireworks reflect off the water around you.

What makes these experiences worth the effort beyond just the logistics is the privacy. You are on a small boat with your family and a few others at most. There are no crowds, no people blocking your view, no one pushing past you to get to parking. It is a genuinely different experience from watching the fireworks in the park or from the resort beach.

Reservations fill quickly during peak seasons. The cruises require advance booking through the Disney reservation system, and popular dates during Christmas week or spring break can book out at or near the 180-day window. These are not guaranteed even with planning, but they are absolutely worth attempting to book if you are staying at a Magic Kingdom area resort.

Fishing Excursions at Old Key West and Saratoga Springs

Bass fishing at Disney's lakes is legitimately good. The lakes on Disney property are managed, which means the fish populations are well maintained and the fishing is productive. Old Key West and Saratoga Springs both offer guided fishing excursions through the resort recreation desks, with all equipment and licenses handled by Disney.

What distinguishes these excursions from typical resort fishing is that Disney offers the option to have your catch cleaned and prepared at a resort restaurant for dinner. That combination of morning fishing and eating what you caught that evening is a genuinely satisfying day, especially for families where some members love fishing and others are more indifferent. The fishing group gets their morning, and the dinner together makes it a shared experience.

Excursions need advance reservations, particularly during busy seasons. The recreation desk at each resort handles booking. Group size is limited per boat, so families with more than four or five people should confirm what capacity is available before planning around this activity.

Golf at Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs sits adjacent to the Lake Buena Vista Golf Course, which is a proper 18-hole championship course. It is not a resort gimmick. The course is maintained to a standard that golfers who play regularly will find satisfying. Tee times are available through the resort recreation desk, and equipment rentals and instruction are on offer for players who want to improve their game or are trying golf for the first time.

For families where one or more people are serious golfers, Saratoga Springs becomes a much more attractive resort purchase than it might otherwise seem. The combination of golf access, the trail system, proximity to Disney Springs, and generally lower resale prices per point than premium Magic Kingdom or Epcot area resorts makes it a strong practical choice for active families who want to mix golf into their Disney vacations.

Old Key West also has an 18-hole course that gets less attention than Saratoga Springs but is similarly legitimate. Both courses are worth booking tee times well in advance during the busier winter and spring travel seasons when Disney visitation overlaps with peak golf weather in Florida.

Moonlight Magic Events

Moonlight Magic is a DVC member-exclusive after-hours event held at various Disney theme parks throughout the year. Members who register in advance get access to a theme park after regular closing hours, with shorter waits, special entertainment, and a generally magical atmosphere that feels different from normal park days because the crowds are small and the energy is relaxed.

These events are free to DVC members with registration, which is a genuine perk of membership with real value. A typical Moonlight Magic event runs for several hours after the park closes to general admission. You can ride popular attractions with minimal waits, experience entertainment that is not available during regular hours, and enjoy the park in a way that is genuinely different from a standard visit.

Registration opens through the DVC member website, and events do fill up. Members who want to attend a specific event should register as soon as the event is announced. The schedule varies year to year, so checking the member website and setting reminders is the practical approach. Events have been held at Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom at various times.

Cultural Programming at Aulani

Aulani in Hawaii has the most distinctive and extensive resort programming of any DVC property. The cultural activities there go well beyond typical resort entertainment. Lei making, hula lessons, traditional craft workshops, and storytelling sessions are offered regularly, all with authentic cultural grounding rather than a theme park approximation of Hawaiian culture.

The resort was designed in collaboration with cultural practitioners to reflect genuine Hawaiian traditions, and that shows in the programming. The luau experience at Aulani is similarly grounded and is widely considered one of the better luaus available in Hawaii. These are not things you could find at any other DVC property. They are specific to Aulani and are a major reason families who have been there tend to want to return.

Aulani's location in Ko Olina on Oahu's west shore also gives access to one of the most beautiful beach situations in the Hawaiian Islands. The lagoons adjacent to the resort are calm, clear, and family-friendly in a way that open ocean beaches in Hawaii often are not. For DVC members interested in using their points for a trip that feels completely different from a Walt Disney World vacation, Aulani is the most compelling option in the portfolio.

Campfire Programs and Evening Entertainment

The campfire program at Fort Wilderness Resort is one of those Disney experiences that gets overlooked because it is old and familiar, but it is genuinely good. Chip and Dale host an evening campfire with s'mores, storytelling, games, and an outdoor movie. It is simple, it is warm, and it works for almost every age group. DVC members staying at nearby resorts can access Fort Wilderness via boat transportation.

Several other resorts offer their own versions of evening campfire programming, generally smaller and less produced than Fort Wilderness but still pleasant. These informal evening activities are worth checking the schedule for at check-in because they vary week to week and some of the best ones are not heavily advertised.

Outdoor movie screenings happen regularly at most resorts, typically after sunset with large inflatable screens and complimentary popcorn. These are casual and low-commitment. Kids who cannot stay awake for the full film get a good chunk of it before falling asleep in their chairs, which is its own kind of perfect Disney memory.

Spa Experiences at Saratoga Springs and Grand Floridian

Saratoga Springs Spa is the most extensive spa facility at any DVC resort. Full-service massages, facials, body wraps, and salon services are available. The spa is separate from the resort's fitness facilities and is a proper destination rather than a hotel afterthought. For couples celebrating anniversaries or families where adults want a genuine recovery day from a week of parks, booking a spa day at Saratoga Springs is worth planning around.

Grand Floridian's spa is similarly well-regarded and adds the backdrop of the resort's Victorian elegance to the experience. Couples who have had spa days at both tend to choose based on preference for the resort atmosphere rather than any significant difference in service quality.

Both spas require advance reservations, especially during busy seasons. Booking 60 to 90 days in advance for peak travel periods is advisable. Spa services are separate from any DVC membership costs and are priced comparably to resort spas at similar properties outside Disney.

Planning Resort Activity Days Into Your Trip

The families who get the most out of DVC membership tend to think of resort activities as a planned part of the trip rather than a fallback option. A deliberate resort day, where you sleep in, use the pool for a few hours, book a fishing excursion or spa appointment, and finish with a campfire or outdoor movie, can be the day everyone remembers most fondly from the trip.

Building one or two of these days into a week-long trip also makes the park days better. You arrive at the parks less exhausted, more patient, and more present than you would be if you were running at full intensity every day of the trip. The resort exists as a real destination, not just a place to sleep.

If you want to explore the resorts themselves before deciding where to purchase, the DVC resorts page covers each property's specific offerings and location. For a look at current resale options, the listings page shows what is available. And if you have questions about which resort's activities best match your family's vacation style, reaching out through the contact page gets you to someone who can talk through the specifics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are DVC resort activities exclusive to DVC members?

Most resort activities are available to all guests staying at that specific resort, not just DVC members. The exception is Moonlight Magic, which is a DVC member-only event. As long as you are a registered guest at the resort, whether you booked with DVC points, through a cash rate, or by renting points from a member, you have access to the resort's recreational facilities and programming.

How far in advance should I book resort activities?

Spa appointments and fishing excursions benefit from 30 to 60 day advance booking, more during peak seasons. Fireworks cruises and specialty activities should be booked as early as possible, sometimes at the 180-day dining reservation window. Drop-in activities like pool games and arts and crafts do not require reservations. Check the activity schedule at check-in for the current week's programming.

Do resort activities cost extra beyond my DVC points?

Most facilities like pools, fitness centers, jogging trails, and sports courts are included. Boat rentals, bike rentals, fishing excursions, spa services, golf, and most organized paid activities cost extra. DVC points cover your villa accommodation but not activities, dining, or recreation rentals beyond what is available as a standard guest amenity.

Which DVC resort has the best overall activity offerings?

Saratoga Springs has the strongest overall active recreation package, with golf, tennis, an extensive trail system, fishing, and direct Disney Springs access. Beach Club wins on pool quality alone with Stormalong Bay. Aulani is in a category of its own for cultural programming and beach access. The right answer for your family depends on what kinds of activities matter most to you.

I’ve dealt with Mark for over 20 years, he’s always available to answer my silly questions, and give honest advice, even if it’s to his detriment. When the time comes to sell, Mark will be my first call.

Mitzi and I couldn't have had a more positive experience as the one which we had, in selling some of our DVC points through DVC Sales with Mark and Lori Webb. and their staff. The whole process was transparent, seamless and we were being fully briefed as to the. progress. Thanks to Mark we were kept aware as to what was happening with the listing, with the ROFR bu Disney, and with the closing process completed, all in a short months' time. Foreign sellers, beware; they will not provide correct information to you about what you can expect when selling. They also, at the end of the process, hit you with fees you did not expect, and you are too late to do anything about it.

I could not imagine being happier with my experience using DVC Sales to sell our Old Key West membership. We enjoyed so many years of Disney vacations. While on your website I started a chat that turned into a call with Lori. She took the time to explain how the website works. Within a few minutes I had created my account and listed my membership for sale. Within 3-4 weeks we received an offer and sold our membership. Thankyou Lori and DVC Sales!

Mark, today we have just received the last check for our 4th contract you sold for us. Our experience was outstanding you deserve the acknowledgement for your service. You remind me of the way customers were treated years ago. Everybody we spoke with or chatted online was friendly and helpful. Although the process took a few months, it was worth the wait. We hope the families who purchased on contracts have as much enjoyment as we have had. If anyone is looking to buy or sell a DVC membership you can use our name. Thank you again!
