DVC Exchange Program: Using Your Points Beyond DVC Resorts
DVC members can trade their points for stays at non-Disney resorts, Disney Cruise Line vacations, and other travel experiences outside the standard DVC resort network. But the exchange options available to you depend on how you purchased your contract, and some of the most popular programs have changed over the years.
We've been helping families understand these programs since 2016, and the most important thing we tell buyers is this: the core value of DVC is booking rooms at the 14 original DVC resorts. Exchange programs are a nice bonus, but they shouldn't be the reason you purchase a contract.
RCI Exchange (Available to All Members)
RCI is a global timeshare exchange network with access to thousands of resorts worldwide. All DVC members, including resale buyers, can exchange points through RCI. This is one of the few exchange options that has no resale restrictions.
To use RCI, you deposit your DVC points into the program and then search for available resorts. You can find properties in Hawaii, the Caribbean, Europe, Mexico, and across the United States. The quality varies widely. Some RCI properties are excellent. Some are not. Do your research before booking.
Point costs through RCI depend on the property, room size, and season. A week at a mid-range resort might cost 100 to 150 DVC points. Compare that to what you could book at a DVC resort with those same points and decide which gives you more value for your family.
Disney Collection (Direct Purchasers Only)
The Disney Collection lets members use DVC points for Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney guided tours, and stays at non-DVC Disney resort hotels. This is a valuable perk, but there's a catch: it's only available to members who purchased their contracts directly from Disney.
If you purchased on the resale market, you cannot access the Disney Collection. Period. This is one of the key resale restrictions that buyers should understand before purchasing. A seven-night Disney cruise can cost 200 to 400+ points depending on the ship, cabin, and itinerary. For most families, that's their entire annual allotment on one trip.
If Disney cruises are a high priority for your family, buying direct from Disney might make sense despite the higher per-point cost. If your primary goal is staying at DVC resorts at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani, Hilton Head, or Vero Beach, resale gives you the same booking rights at 40 to 60% less than Disney's retail price.
Member Getaways (Restrictions Apply for Resale)
Member Getaways offers point redemption at participating hotels and resorts outside the DVC network. Properties rotate and can include Disney hotels, partner properties, and resorts worldwide. Availability changes frequently.
Resale restrictions on Member Getaways depend on when and where you purchased. Members who bought resale contracts at Riviera Resort cannot access Getaways at all. For other resorts, restrictions vary by purchase date. When we work with buyers, we spell out exactly which exchange options apply to each specific contract so you know what you're getting before you sign.
How Exchange Values Compare to DVC Resort Stays
The best value for your DVC points is almost always booking at a DVC resort. The point charts are designed around that core use case, and Disney keeps the resort quality high because that's where most members use their points.
Exchange programs convert your points at different rates, and the math doesn't always work in your favor. If you can book a studio at Saratoga Springs for 10 points per night in value season, but an RCI exchange costs 20 points per night for a comparable room at a non-Disney resort, the DVC resort is clearly the better deal.
That said, exchanges make sense in specific situations. If you want to visit a destination where there are no DVC resorts (London, Hawaii's Big Island, the Caribbean), exchanging points through RCI gets you there without paying cash for a hotel. Think of it as flexibility, not as the primary way to use your membership.
What This Means for Resale Buyers
If you're purchasing DVC resale, your guaranteed exchange access includes:
Booking at all 14 original DVC resorts (11-month home resort, 7-month all resorts)
RCI exchange for stays at thousands of non-Disney resorts worldwide
Resale buyers do NOT have access to:
Disney Cruise Line point redemption
Adventures by Disney tours
Stays at non-DVC Disney hotels using points
Certain Member Getaways options (varies by resort and purchase date)
For most families who primarily vacation at Walt Disney World, the resale restrictions don't change the day-to-day value of ownership. You get the same rooms, the same reservation system, and the same home resort priority. The savings of purchasing resale at 40 to 60% below retail more than offset the exchange options you give up.
If you want to talk through which exchange options apply to a specific contract, call us at (407) 205-1435 or reach out online. We review these details with every buyer before they sign.
Common Questions About DVC Exchanges
Can DVC resale buyers use their points for Disney cruises?
No. Disney Cruise Line point redemption is only available to members who purchased directly from Disney. Resale buyers cannot book cruises with DVC points. You can still book a Disney cruise by paying cash, but you can't use your DVC points to cover the cost.
Can I use DVC points at non-Disney resorts?
Yes, through the RCI exchange program. All DVC members, including resale buyers, can exchange points for stays at thousands of resorts worldwide through RCI. Quality and availability vary, so research the specific property before booking.
Is the DVC exchange program worth using?
It depends on where you want to travel. For Walt Disney World vacations, booking directly at DVC resorts gives you the best point value. For travel outside the Disney ecosystem, RCI exchanges provide access to destinations you couldn't reach with DVC points alone. Compare the point cost of the exchange to what those same points would book at a DVC resort to decide if it's worth it.
What exchange options do resale DVC buyers lose?
Resale buyers cannot access the Disney Collection (cruises, Adventures by Disney, non-DVC Disney hotels) or certain Member Getaways options. The restrictions vary by resort and purchase date. RCI exchange access is available to all members regardless of purchase method.

I've dealt with Mark for over 20 years, he's always available to answer my silly questions, and give honest advice, even if it's to his detriment. When the time comes to sell, Mark will be my first call.
Mark was a great guy to work with while successfully selling my 6 DVC contracts. He definitely knows the DVC business well. He always responded very quickly any time I had questions or needed help with any part of the sales process. He works very hard to earn his commission, especially considering that he has the lowest one around. He is up front about everything with no hidden surprises. I would obviously not hesitate to use his services again.

Mark was incredible about helping us with any questions we had during the process of purchasing our first DVC contract. Mark helped us navigate all aspects from making our offer all the way to the close of the deal and getting our points loaded up. We would certainly buy more points here in the future! I highly recommend him and his team.

We are DVC members since 2004. Mark and Lori Webb are truly amazing. We have sold and purchased two DVC contracts, Boardwalk and Copper Creek. The process from beginning to end was seamless. It could not have gone any smoother. They both made us so comfortable. They were available 24/7 and returned calls quickly. The whole office staff was efficient and answered all our questions. It was a Magical Experience! Thank you so much!! Ed and Gale Liddell

I had a great experience selling my Grand Floridian contract. Mark was super helpful and easy to get in touch with when needed. The website was easy to use and handled the process seamlessly. It was nice to be able to check in on the status tracker. Closing went smoothly and a lot faster than I expected. All around a great experience. I highly recommend DVC Sales!

Very happy with all aspects of working with DVC Sales and this is the second time of using them! Their website is clear and user-friendly and as international sellers, the information on FIRPTA was hugely helpful, particularly the links to all the forms. The whole process from start to finish has been seamless. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to other sellers as a highly professional company. Thank you Mark!
