When Will Disney Activate My DVC Membership?
When you purchase a DVC membership through resale, Disney typically activates your account seven to ten business days after the title company records and submits your deed. We have helped hundreds of families through this process, and understanding this timeline helps you plan your first vacation booking without any surprises.
The activation process is straightforward once you understand what drives the timeline. It is not slow because of bureaucracy on Disney side. It moves at the pace it does because several steps have to happen in sequence, each depending on the last. Let us walk through the whole thing.
The Activation Process From Start to Finish
After your DVC contract closes, the title company handles the next steps for you. They send your recorded deed directly to Disney Member Administration, where Disney processes your new ownership details and creates or updates your membership account. You do not need to submit any additional paperwork to Disney yourself. The title company handles that communication.
Disney controls this entire process internally. While most activations happen within that seven to ten business day window, some can take slightly longer if Disney processing volume is high or if there are questions about your deed. The holiday season and peak vacation booking periods sometimes create mild slowdowns, but nothing dramatic.
One thing worth knowing is that the clock on those seven to ten business days starts when Disney receives your documents, not when your closing date occurs. There can be a day or two between closing and the title company submitting everything to Disney, so build that into your planning.
Your Welcome Email and Portal Access
Once Disney activates your membership, you will receive a welcome email with instructions for accessing the DVC Member Portal. If you already own DVC points from a previous purchase, Disney will attempt to link your new contract to your existing Member ID.
Whether Disney links your contracts depends on two factors. If your use year matches your existing contract and the titling is identical, Disney will add the new points to your current Member ID. If your use year is different or you purchased under different ownership such as adding a spouse or purchasing in a trust, Disney may assign you a separate Member ID instead.
Having multiple Member IDs is not a problem at all. You can view all your contracts when you log into the Member Portal and easily switch between them to see your point balances and make reservations. Many longtime DVC members operate with two or three Member IDs from different purchase transactions over the years.
When Your Contract Does Not Appear Right Away
If you do not see your new contract in the Member Portal after ten business days, contact Disney Member Services at (800) 800-9800. They can check on your activation status and resolve any linking issues on their end. Most of the time this is a simple fix that takes a few minutes on their side of the phone.
Sometimes there is a mismatch in how your name appears on different contracts. For example, if one contract has your name as John A. Smith and a new one processes as John Smith, Disney might not automatically link them. They can fix this quickly once you call and explain the situation.
If you need additional support outside of Disney system issues, you can also reach out to our team at DVC Sales and we can help coordinate with the title company if there is a documentation question on that side of things.
What You Can Do Once Activated
Once your membership is active, you have full access to all DVC member benefits. You can book stays at any DVC resort, with eleven-month priority booking at your home resort and seven-month booking at all other resorts. You can also bank unused points to the following use year or borrow points from next year allocation if you need more flexibility for a specific trip.
Your points work the same whether you purchased directly from Disney or through resale, with one exception. Resale contracts purchased after January 19, 2019 cannot be used to book stays at Disney Riviera Resort or any future resorts Disney designates as restricted. This does not affect the vast majority of DVC vacations. You still have access to all the classic Walt Disney World resorts, Disneyland Grand Californian Hotel and Spa villas, Aulani in Hawaii, and Hilton Head Island.

Making Your First Reservation
Many new members are eager to book their first DVC vacation right after activation. Before you start browsing availability, take a few minutes to understand the how DVC works page and the different room categories and point requirements across resorts. Studio villas typically require the fewest points, while three-bedroom Grand Villas can use 75 or more points per night during peak seasons.
If you purchased points with a specific trip in mind, you can start checking availability as soon as your membership is active. Popular resorts and dates book quickly, especially during holiday weeks and spring break. The DVC Member Portal shows real-time availability and lets you book immediately when you find open dates that work.
One important thing to know about the booking windows: your eleven-month home resort window only applies if you are booking your home resort. If you want to stay at a different resort, that seven-month window is when availability opens up for you. Booking at the right time relative to these windows makes a real difference in getting the room type and dates you want.
Understanding Your Use Year
Your use year is the month when your annual point allocation refreshes. If you have a December use year, for example, you receive your full annual point allotment every December 1st. Understanding this is important for planning because banking and borrowing rules both depend on where you are in your current use year cycle.
Points that are banked move to the following use year and must be used before the end of that year. Borrowed points come from the next use year allocation. Disney has specific deadlines for each of these actions, and missing them can mean losing points you could have saved or used differently.
If your activation happens late in your use year, it is worth calling Disney Member Services to ask about any banking or borrowing options that might apply to your situation. The title company handles the proration of points at closing, but the ongoing management of those points is your responsibility once the account is active.
Managing Expectations for Resale Buyers
While Disney usually activates memberships within seven to ten business days, this timeline can vary. County recording offices sometimes experience delays, particularly during busy periods or around major holidays. Title companies typically track this process and can provide updates if your deed recording takes longer than expected before they can submit to Disney.
If you are planning to book a vacation shortly after closing, build a few extra days into your timeline. This gives you buffer time in case activation takes longer than expected. Most of our clients find that planning their first trip for about two weeks after closing provides plenty of margin to ensure the account is fully active and ready to book.
Do not try to call Disney Member Services to rush your activation. They cannot manually expedite the process, and the call will not accomplish anything practical. The process moves as fast as the title company submissions and Disney internal queue allow. Patience here is genuinely the right strategy.
If You Are Adding Points to an Existing Membership
If you already own DVC points and are purchasing additional contracts through resale, the activation process works the same way but the outcome can vary. As mentioned, Disney may link the new contract to your existing Member ID or assign a new one, depending on use year and titling.
If you are specifically trying to consolidate contracts under one Member ID, contact Disney Member Services after activation and ask them to review the linking. In some cases they can merge contracts or at least ensure your Member IDs appear together in the portal so you can see your full picture in one place.
Keep in mind that even if contracts have different use years, you can still manage all of them from the portal. You just switch between Member IDs when you need to look at a different contract. It is a minor inconvenience, but it does not limit your ability to book vacations or use any of your points.
Annual Dues and Your Active Account
Once your membership is active, you will also start receiving communications about your annual dues. DVC annual dues fund resort operations, maintenance, and property taxes. They are due annually and the amount depends on your home resort and point count. These dues are separate from any mortgage payment if you financed your purchase.
Disney will send you a dues statement each year, typically in the fall for the following calendar year. Paying dues on time is important because delinquent dues can affect your ability to make reservations. Disney maintains strong controls around dues collection and members with outstanding balances lose reservation access until they are current.
