Is RCI a Good Use of DVC Points?

DVC resale – Explore magical Disney resorts and adventures.

Is RCI a Good Use of DVC Points?

Is RCI a good use of DVC points?

RCI is the world's largest timeshare exchange network, giving members access to properties at resorts across the globe. DVC members who purchased directly from Disney have the option to exchange their points through RCI, essentially trading their Disney vacation currency for stays at non-Disney resorts in destinations like Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, and many others. On paper it sounds appealing. In practice, the math rarely favors it.

We've talked through this question with many DVC owners over the years. The honest answer is that RCI exchanges can make sense in specific circumstances, but for the majority of DVC owners the majority of the time, using your points for DVC resorts directly is a significantly better value proposition. Let's look at why, and also at when RCI might genuinely work in your favor.

How RCI Exchange Works for DVC Members

DVC members who have access to RCI can deposit their DVC points into the exchange system and use the resulting RCI "trading power" to book stays at RCI-affiliated resorts. The exchange process involves depositing your points a year or more in advance, waiting for confirmation of availability at your desired destination, and paying RCI's annual membership fee plus exchange fees per transaction.

There are a few important limitations to understand from the start. RCI exchange is only available to DVC owners who purchased directly from Disney. Resale owners do not have access to this exchange program, which is one of the perks restricted to direct purchasers. If you purchased your DVC contract on the resale market, RCI is not available to you regardless of which resort you own.

Even for direct purchasers, using RCI requires converting DVC points (which are already a form of vacation currency) into RCI points or trading power, and that conversion doesn't happen at a one-to-one value. You typically get less purchasing power through RCI than your DVC points would deliver if used directly at Disney resorts.

The Value Problem with RCI Exchanges

DVC points are valuable because they unlock access to Disney Vacation Club resort accommodations, which Disney sells directly at prices ranging into the hundreds of dollars per point. When you use your DVC points at a DVC resort, you're getting accommodations that would otherwise cost substantial nightly rates as a cash guest.

When you exchange those same points through RCI, you're trading a high-value DVC accommodation currency for access to a much broader but often lower-value exchange pool. The RCI inventory includes properties across a huge range of quality levels, from beachfront luxury resorts to modest units in secondary markets. What you can access depends on your trading power, the time of year, and availability.

Many DVC owners who have used RCI exchanges report getting significantly less accommodation value per point than they'd receive at a DVC resort. A week at a DVC studio in Florida might deliver considerable value per point used. An RCI exchange for a comparable-sized unit at a non-Disney resort in a less-desirable destination might use a similar number of points while delivering a fraction of the value if you were to compare it to the cash rate for that same unit.

Costs Beyond the Points Themselves

Using RCI isn't just a matter of depositing points and booking a stay. There are additional costs that reduce the net value of the exchange:

RCI annual membership fee. Maintaining an active RCI membership requires paying an annual fee. This cost isn't enormous, but it applies every year you want to have access to the exchange program, regardless of whether you actually use it in a given year.

Exchange fees per transaction. Each time you book through RCI, you pay an exchange fee on top of the membership fee. These per-booking fees add to the real cost of each exchange trip.

Forfeited Disney benefits. When you use your points through RCI, you're not using them at a Disney resort. That means you're missing out on the on-property advantages that come with staying at a DVC resort: Early Theme Park Entry, access to Disney transportation, Extended Evening Hours at deluxe resort properties, and the overall DVC resort experience that your membership was designed to provide.

When RCI Might Actually Make Sense

With all of that said, there are scenarios where RCI exchanges represent a reasonable use of DVC points. The key is being realistic about what you're trading and what you're getting.

You want to vacation somewhere Disney doesn't have DVC resorts. If you genuinely want to stay at a resort in Hawaii (outside of Aulani), in Europe, at a ski destination, or at a coastal property that Disney doesn't serve, RCI is one way to use your DVC points for that experience. If the alternative is letting those points expire unused, an RCI exchange, even at imperfect value, is better than forfeiting the points entirely.

You've already used your prime DVC bookings for the year and have leftover points. If you have points that won't make it to the next use year through banking, using them for an RCI exchange beats letting them expire. Even a modest-value exchange delivers something for points that would otherwise become worthless.

You're a direct purchaser who values the flexibility of a global exchange network. Some DVC owners genuinely appreciate the breadth of RCI's network for the years when they want to vacation somewhere other than Disney. For these owners, the annual membership fee is a reasonable cost for the access it provides. This is a preference-based calculation rather than a pure value calculation.

Better Alternatives Before Turning to RCI

Before exchanging into RCI, consider whether there are better uses for your points within the DVC system itself. DVC has properties at Aulani in Hawaii and at Disneyland in California, so "getting off property" doesn't necessarily mean leaving the DVC network. If a Hawaiian vacation is the goal, Aulani is generally a better use of DVC points than an RCI exchange for a different Hawaii resort, assuming you want the Disney experience.

Banking points to cover a larger trip in a future year is usually better than accepting a poor RCI exchange rate. If you have surplus points this year, bank them (within your use year's banking deadline) and combine them with next year's allocation for a more substantive Disney vacation.

Borrowing points from a future year to cover a non-RCI option you're excited about is also often preferable to an RCI exchange. If the choice is between a mediocre RCI exchange this year and a great DVC trip next year that requires borrowing points, the DVC trip usually wins on value.

The Resale Perspective

If you purchased your DVC contract on the resale market, RCI isn't available to you, and that's not a meaningful loss for most families. The resale restrictions that remove RCI access are real, but the value of what you keep, full DVC resort booking capability at your home resort with 11-month priority and across the DVC system with 7-month access, is far more significant than the value of an exchange program that delivers suboptimal point value for most use cases.

The savings from purchasing resale typically exceed the value of all the restricted perks combined, including RCI. A family that saves $15,000 to $25,000 on their initial resale purchase compared to buying directly from Disney can take multiple additional Disney trips with that savings, which far outweighs the value of an annual RCI membership.

The Bottom Line on RCI and DVC Points

RCI is a reasonable option in specific circumstances, primarily when you want to vacation somewhere Disney doesn't have DVC resorts, or when you have points that would otherwise expire unused. For most DVC owners in most years, using your points at DVC resorts directly delivers better per-point value than exchanging through RCI.

If you're a direct purchaser evaluating whether RCI is worth the ongoing membership cost, the honest calculation is to add up the annual membership fees over several years and compare that to the value you'd actually extract through exchanges. For many owners, the RCI membership quietly renews without delivering enough value to justify its annual cost.

If you're thinking about DVC ownership and wondering whether the loss of RCI access in a resale purchase matters, our honest view is that it rarely does. The core value of DVC is in the Disney resort stays themselves. I’ve dealt with Mark for over 20 years, he’s always available to answer my silly questions, and give honest advice, even if it’s to his detriment. When the time comes to sell, Mark will be my first call.

Mitzi and I couldn't have had a more positive experience as the one which we had, in selling some of our DVC points through DVC Sales with Mark and Lori Webb. and their staff. The whole process was transparent, seamless and we were being fully briefed as to the. progress. Thanks to Mark we were kept aware as to what was happening with the listing, with the ROFR bu Disney, and with the closing process completed, all in a short months' time. We couldn't have asked for a better group than DVC Sales for the sale. they were honest . amd truly caring on our behalf. Mitzi and Lee Tucholski

Foreign sellers, beware; they will not provide correct information to you about what you can expect when selling. They also, at the end of the process, hit you with fees you did not expect, and you are too late to do anything about it.

I could not imagine being happier with my experience using DVC Sales to sell our Old Key West membership. We enjoyed so many years of Disney vacations. While on your website I started a chat that turned into a call with Lori. She took the time to explain how the website works. Within a few minutes I had created my account and listed my membership for sale. Within 3-4 weeks we received an offer and sold our membership. Thankyou Lori and DVC Sales!

Mark, today we have just received the last check for our 4th contract you sold for us. Our experience was outstanding you deserve the acknowledgement for your service. You remind me of the way customers were treated years ago. Everybody we spoke with or chatted online was friendly and helpful. Although the process took a few months, it was worth the wait. We hope the families who purchased on contracts have as much enjoyment as we have had. If anyone is looking to buy or sell a DVC membership you can use our name. Thank you again!
